Wireless Routers as Motion Detectors

Comcast has integrated motion detection capabilities into its Xfinity wireless routers, allowing users to receive push notifications when motion is detected near connected devices such as televisions or printers. The feature is configurable with different settings for when users are home, asleep, or away, providing a degree of control over the alerts received. Comcast’s Xfinity app provides a user interface to view live motion activity and a history of recent motion events. The company admits that the effectiveness of the motion detection is heavily influenced by factors such as home size, building materials, and router placement – meaning it won’t be consistently accurate. Notably, Comcast’s own support documentation indicates that data generated by the WiFi Motion feature may be shared with third parties, including in connection with law enforcement investigations, and pursuant to a court order or subpoena. This raises significant privacy concerns about the potential use of user location data and activity patterns.
