LinkedIn wins court order blocking mass scraping of user data
LinkedIn successfully blocked a court order that would have allowed two software companies to scrape massive amounts of user data. The companies, ProAPIs and Netswift, were accused of creating fake accounts to continuously extract user information, including member data, company details, and public posts. LinkedIn has been aggressively pursuing legal action against data scraping practices.
LinkedIn has won a legal battle against ProAPIs and Netswift, securing a court order that prohibits the companies from scraping user data on a large scale. The lawsuit, filed last October, alleged that ProAPIs and Netswift were operating a network of thousands of fake accounts to continuously extract user information from LinkedIn. This included details about members, companies, and the content they shared, such as posts and comments. LinkedIn routinely identified and removed these fake accounts within hours of their creation, but the sheer volume of accounts created daily made it nearly impossible to fully prevent the data scraping. The court order requires the companies to cease all scraping activities, prevent future scraping, and delete any previously collected data. This legal victory follows a similar win five months prior against another firm accused of distributing a browser extension used for unauthorized data scraping. LinkedIn has been increasingly focused on combating data scraping practices to protect user privacy and maintain control over their data.
