Cyber Command turns to veteran of intelligence agencies for top AI role

U.S. Cyber Command is bolstering its artificial intelligence capabilities by appointing Ronzelle Green as its new Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer. Green brings extensive experience from intelligence agencies, including his most recent role as head of research and development at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). He previously served as chief information officer for the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency and as director of Commonwealth Integration in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security.

This appointment reflects a larger Pentagon-wide initiative to integrate AI into military operations. Cyber Command has requested substantial funding, increasing from $5 million in fiscal 2026 to $138 million in fiscal 2027, to develop AI capabilities for cyber defense and threat response. The goal is to enable cyber operators to process large volumes of data, identify malicious activity, and respond to threats faster than human operators alone can achieve.

Unlike the National Security Agency, which has established its own Artificial Intelligence Security Center, Cyber Command’s AI focal point is currently decentralized, with various pilot programs and efforts occurring across the military. Green’s primary focus will be to consolidate and organize these disparate efforts, acting as a central point of contact for AI initiatives within Cyber Command.
