Five Eyes warn Chinese spies are using job sites to recruit insiders
The Five Eyes intelligence alliance has issued a joint warning about Chinese military intelligence services using online job platforms to recruit individuals with access to sensitive information. This tactic, described as a ‘newer method now deployed at scale,’ involves posing as recruiters to target government and military personnel, as well as academics and journalists, seeking valuable insights and network connections. The warning highlights the potential risk to national security and democratic processes.
The alert, titled ‘Safeguarding Our Secrets,’ was issued by the domestic security and counterintelligence agencies of Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. It details a shift in Chinese espionage tactics, moving from direct contact via platforms like LinkedIn to leveraging job advertisements on online platforms to identify and recruit individuals with access to classified or privileged information. Recruiters often present themselves as consultants or HR firms, targeting analysts with foreign-policy and defense expertise. The agencies emphasize that the information sought doesn't always need to be formally classified, but access to government policy or military strategy can be exploited to build a comprehensive operational picture. This approach allows for the collection of seemingly innocuous data, combined with more sensitive reporting, to pose a significant risk to national security.
