Google adds Android protection against AI deepfake scam calls
Google is launching a new Android security feature, "fake call detection," to combat increasingly sophisticated scams utilizing AI-generated deepfake calls. The system works by verifying call authenticity in real-time, alerting users to potentially spoofed calls from impersonators. This proactive measure addresses a growing problem of fraud and aims to protect users from falling victim to these deceptive tactics.
Google's "fake call detection" feature leverages the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard to identify and warn users about calls where scammers are impersonating their contacts using AI voice cloning. The system operates by establishing a silent, encrypted confirmation signal between caller and recipient devices. If this signal is absent, indicating a potential spoof, the recipient's device verifies the call's authenticity by contacting the caller's device. This immediate verification process provides users with a real-time warning to hang up, preventing them from being misled by the impersonation.
