Dark Reading is launching a new section, DR Global Europe, to provide region-specific cybersecurity intelligence tailored for professionals in the EU and UK. This expansion addresses unique cyber threats facing Europe, including a significant increase in targeted attacks from Russia-backed groups, a high rate of business email compromise (BEC) incidents, and dominance in global DDoS attacks. The initiative recognizes the distinct differences in threat landscapes compared to North America, particularly regarding ransomware awareness and the proximity of threat actors.
Dark Reading is launching DR Global Europe, a new section dedicated to providing cybersecurity intelligence specifically for professionals in the European Union and the United Kingdom. This expansion is a direct response to the evolving cyber threat landscape in Europe, which presents unique challenges compared to North America.
Europe faces a consistent onslaught of targeted attacks against its critical infrastructure, primarily from Russia-backed threat groups, driven by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Simultaneously, business email compromise (BEC) incidents are significantly higher per capita in parts of Europe, particularly in Germany and the Benelux region, accounting for 81% of reported incidents this year. In contrast, the US saw 27% of investigated BEC incidents in 2025.
Furthermore, Europe currently holds a global dominance in DDoS attacks, absorbing 48.4% of all global incidents – five times higher than North America’s 9.4%, largely due to Russian-aligned hacktivist groups. Historically, ransomware has been a major concern in North America, but now ransomware gangs are increasingly targeting Europe, attracted by a perceived lack of ransomware awareness within the region.
Southern and Eastern Europe are experiencing rapid growth in cybersecurity spending, with Spain recording a 20% increase, Italy a 15%, and Poland a remarkable 59% year-on-year – significantly outpacing North America’s 10% growth and the global average of 12.2%. This growth is driven by increased investment and a heightened awareness of cybersecurity risks.
DR Global Europe will provide tailored analysis, intelligence, and actionable insights, recognizing the differences between CISA advisories and ENISA recommendations, and understanding how Russian APT activity manifests differently when critical infrastructure is located closer to the threat actor’s operations center. The section will be built on in-region sources and a deep understanding of the unique European cyber threat landscape.
